Backyard Natur-in' in West Virginia

Jim and Ginger took a walk around the yard with the camera today. Here's some things that they found.

It looks like just a hole, right?

Going up to investigate (on the left side of the hole)

Then the yellow-jacket wasps come out to shoo them away from the hive! They must have still been on "red alert" after the swarm when dh was mowing the lawn and came across the nest.

Who thought your loofah sponge in the bathroom came from the sea? It is actually from the garden. This is what it looks like before it is mature and dried. When it's dried, we'll peel it, shake out the seeds, and slice it into pieces.

Our Lemon Queen Sunflowers for the Great Sunflower Project finally opened. Unfortunately, I can't say we've had any bee visitors to them yet.

Here are our other sunflowers.

Ginger is about 5 feet tall. The flowers are about double her size.

These sunflowers have had plenty of bee visitors.

They've also had some butterfly visitors. Here is an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail checking out the sunflowers.

This "little" guy was found on the stalk. He's about 2 inches long! I love how you can see the veins in his wings and the hairs on the stem.

There is so much to see in just the backyard. What's going on in your neck of the woods?

  1. Your sunflowers are looking great! We took part in the Great Sunflower Project as well and we found that when the Lemon Sunflower was in the sun, it had bees so we had to do our count right at the right time of day.

    Interesting post. :)
