Alaska’s Last Great Race, The Iditarod, will be starting on March 3, 2012, and I thought this would be a great time to share some of the current links that I recently collected on this event. When my daughter was younger, we had a fun time studying and tracking the race together. Hopefully, you will find fun inspiration with some of these resources.
Homeschool in the Woods offers a free and very complete unit study on Iditarod & Alaska.
Easy Fun School has compiled a free list of Iditarod unit inspired activities.
The Iditarod’s main race page has specific pages set up for teachers and students.
Another free Iditarod unit study can be found on Squidoo.
The Old Schoolhouse offers an inexpensive e-book, Following the Iditarod in their store for only $1.00. This e-book not only includes the unit study, but also things like information on the Virtual Iditarod, copywork, glossary of terms, activity pages, and fill in the blank questions.
Hands of a Child offers an Iditarod Project Pack for children in grades 3 and up. They also offer a Sled Dogs Project Pack for children in grades 3-8. These are a little more expensive ($8), but are lapbook projects.
Following this link will bring you to a nice collection of books about the Iditarod.
I found movies about the Iditarod at Amazon. Six episodes of Iditarod: The Toughest Race on Earth are also available to watch on Netflix.
